about koningen

Overview

Koningen,is a prolific painter continually expanding his application to canvas creating bold and expressive works. His paintings evoke feelings of intensity, mystery and secrets, sometimes erotic and sensual with a rythum of colour and music.

Vibrant colour, texture and raw energy are the signature marks of this Brugge based international artist. Norwegian born, with an Amsterdam childhood and an Australian education, this abstract artist has a truly international background.

Koningen studied art and industrial design in the abstract 60's although he left the arts behind for a career in business and stockbroking. It wasn't until the early 90's he resumed his love affair with painting and dedicated himself to a full-time career painting.

"I'm not afraid to explore and experiment with different tools to create texture on my canvas. I love the excitement of sweeping back thickly layered fresh paint and cutting into previous layers to reveal an extraordinary montage of fleeting colours, as though looking into the secret soul of the painting. While I may begin a painting with a vision of a certain colour or a specific theme, I never really know exactly what form the finished painting will take. I simply allow my instinct to guide my hands and draw inspiration from the creative process. My passions, the place I live in, the surrounding environment and my music are all external factors that influence my work."      - svein koningen

Koningen's work is resolutely painterley. His art speaks of wild landscapes, nature's rhythm of changing seasons and more urban works reflect his background in industrial design. Many of his works reflect his fascination with music sometimes directly transporting the emotion into rhythm on canvas. In their energetic gesture, with bold texture and colours, Koningen’s work’s assert an ongoing strength of a style which remains true of the abstract masters of the past, like De Kooning and Pollack.

This abstract expressionist has gained a strong following in Australia and is fast gaining respect with his work in Northern Europe.
